The designs for this series of platters are based on Japanese hanafuda (flower card) playing cards. Smaller than their western equivalent, hanafuda feature plants, animals, birds, or man-made objects on their face.

Hikari Masuda is a ceramicist based in Tokoname, Japan, a town with a ceramic history reaching back more than 1000 years. Her joyful, playful work is rich in vivid folkloric depictions of animals and mythical creatures - her masterful output incorporates many forms and glazes, including figurines, vases, cups, bowls and stunning decorative plates.
