Large ceramic platter in the shape of a fishing bear by Hikari Masuda, from the exhibition "serious PLAY", August 2025 at DEA EAST.

This gorgeous platter in blue and white features Hikari's take on the traditional image of a fishing bear, often seen depicted in Hokkaido.

Gently curved at the edges, it's perfect for serving but equally perfect displayed just on its own.

Hikari Masuda is a ceramicist based in Tokoname - recognised as one of Japan's six ancient kilns with a ceramic history reaching back more than 1000 years. 

Masuda's joyful, playful work is rich in vivid folkloric depictions of animals and mythical creatures, drawn from both Japanese and western traditions. Her restless, masterful making incorporates myriad forms and glazes, producing a dazzling array of work that's attracted a passionate following in Japan and Australia.
