Medium-sized ceramic vases in the shape of bears by Hikari Masuda, from the exhibition "serious PLAY", August 2025 at DEA EAST.

In each of these, the main vase is shaped like a standing bear, which is also holding a second, tiny bear that's a bud vase.

There are three bears in this series, each with a different coloured waistcoat - choose from pink and yellow, blue and yellow or lilac and yellow.

Hikari Masuda is a ceramicist based in Tokoname - recognised as one of Japan's six ancient kilns with a ceramic history reaching back more than 1000 years. 

Masuda's joyful, playful work is rich in vivid folkloric depictions of animals and mythical creatures, drawn from both Japanese and western traditions. Her restless, masterful making incorporates myriad forms and glazes, producing a dazzling array of work that's attracted a passionate following in Japan and Australia.
