Art Kintsugi introductory workshop

4 hours tuition, followed by refreshments and mingling.

contents
Participants will learn the introductory technique of Art Kintsugi mending, following the 7 essential  kintsugi steps and culminating in a piece of your own kintsugi art to bring home.

The workshop will focus on using safer and more accessible materials, such as epoxy, lacquer and gold metal powder (as an alternative to urushi and 24K gold).

Yoko will talk about the history of kintsugi, the important culture and philosophy behind it, as well as ancient materials and tools.

aims
The workshop is designed so that, once completed, participants will then have the skills to take on their own kintsugi projects.

tools and materials
All tools and materials used in the class will be included. One small ceramic piece, suitable for the workshop, will be provided per person.

Nb. for this course, there is not the scope to bring and repair your own pieces, however the intention is that after the class, you will then have the skill to work on your own pieces at home.

For subsequent projects, an Art Kintsugi starter kit can be purchased after the workshop.

These must be purchased in advance - limited to 6 people maximum.
Note that once purchased, there are no cancellations possible.

refreshments 
After the workshop, there will be refreshments served and a chance to mingle with the other participants and speak informally with Yoko.

Refreshments will include beer, wine and non-alcoholic drinks, as well as delicious, basque-style cheesecakes, courtesy of long time DEA supporter, 15cenchi.

Participants must be over 18 years old.
Not recommended for pregnant people.
No food/alcohol allowed until after the workshop.

Kintsugi is the mindful Japanese art of mending - a way of giving a new life to broken objects. It's a century-old Japanese craft where broken ceramics are pieced back together using ancient urushi lacquer and gold dust, based on the philosophy of wabi sabi - finding beauty in imperfection.

The process transforms much loved worn items into a beautifully crafted new piece of art. It is a chance to live a more sustainable way and to rescue objects which would otherwise be discarded.

Yoko Kawada feels that while kintsugi is a traditional technique, it also has a place in current debates about sustainability, as it shows that beauty can be achieved by recycling and reusing.
