A pair of tachibina - Japanese Edo-period standing dolls.
These serene and elegant figures, depicting an emperor and an empress, are of a kind that were popular during the Edo period (1603–1868). They are an early representation of similar figures now seen in doll displays for hinamatsuri (the girls day festival).
These tachibina feature heads made from hariko (Japanese papier-mâché), painted with dignified expressions, then dressed in kimono made from folded and layered washi (traditional Japanese paper), painted in intricate designs in lovely muted shades of brown, green, white and blue.
The box can be mounted upright on a shelf, but we have added a hook to the back to allow them to hang on a wall.
