Large gold Japanese Daruma figure, hand made using the "Hariko" technique. 

A "Daruma" represents the sitting figure of Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen Buddhism. They are widely popular as a lucky charm, not only within Zen but across many religions.

These particular figures say “Shichiten battou“ on the back, which means “fall over 7 times, get up 8 times”. This phrase is used when you want to say “keep at it until one succeeds!”.

In Japanese, "Hariko" means paper craft. It is said that this papier-mache technique came down from China in around the Muromachi period. It spread around Japan and has been used for such as folk toys.
