Kintarō is a popular figure in Japanese folk lore - said to be a child of superhuman strength who was raised in the mountains and befriended by wild animals. He's often depicted (as he is in this figure) riding a bear and holding a large koi fish.
This figure features a moving bear head and is packaged in a cardboard box.

In Japanese, hariko means paper craft. It is said that this papier-mâché technique came down from China in around the Muromachi period. It spread around Japan and is commonly used for folk toys and figurines.
