Large, v-shaped ceramic vase in a tenmoku glaze - from a collaboration, instigated by DEA, between Toru Hatta and David Collins from 2026.
This piece is part of a small and very special collection of work, arising out of the throwing demonstration given by Toru Hatta and presented by DEA at David Collins Studio in February 2026.
During the event, Toru produced ten, masterful vessels, which were later glazed and fired by David Collins in a beautiful and sensitive response to Hatta's extraordinary technique. This was a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and a rare chance to experience a Toru Hatta form in a glaze other than his signature shiro-, kuro- or matsu-kake.

Background
In February 2026, we were proud to host Toru Hatta at DEA EAST for the final stage of his 2025/26 world tour. A special event from that time was a throwing demonstration, given by Hatta-san and presented by DEA and David Collins at his beautiful studio in the hills above Berry, NSW.
During the course of an hour, Toru produced no less than ten, stunning vessels, all done while speaking about his process and taking questions.
Afterwards, it was agreed that he would leave the work for David to glaze and fire at his discretion - thus leading to an unplanned but unique and exciting collaboration.
We are now thrilled to present the finished work to our customers, and we think David has done a beautiful job of bringing Toru-san's exceptional throwing to completion.

Toru Hatta is a powerhouse ceramicist based near Osaka, Japan.
His work is a contemporary fusion of Japanese, Korean and Chinese ceramic history, expert craftsmanship and a focus on the spiritual character of clay.
At DEA, we've been admiring and purchasing his work since our initial foray to Japan in 2013. We formally introduced his work to Australia with a solo show in 2022 and we are now honoured to welcome him in person to Australia for the final leg of his 2025/26 world tour and to present this masterful collection.

David Collins is an renowned Australian ceramicist who lives and works in the picturesque hinterland above Berry, NSW. His elegant and masterful work is the culmination of experimentation and refinement made during a practice stretching back over 35 years.
He draws particular influence from the Japanese tradition, especially work from Tamba and Shigaraki, and from the English Studio Pottery movement, pioneered by Bernard Leach.
