Extra-large, footed urn / vase by Tetsuya Ōzawa, from the exhibition "serious PLAY", August 2025 at DEA EAST.

A stunning and masterful work that combines both traditional Japanese and classical elements.

This magnificent vessel is mounted on a small, tapered, pedestal foot, swelling to a wide, moon jar shaped body and then topped with a precise and elegant, flared, classical rim.

Finished in Ōzawa's signature, textured, black, it exudes a quiet power that's serene and perfectly balanced.

Born in 1984, Tetsuya Ōzawa lives and works in the ancient ceramic town of Tokoname, Japan. After studying Fine Arts at Nagoya University, he apprenticed under ceramic master, Yoshikawa Masamichi.

In his work, executed with exceptional restraint and refinement, there's a nod to classicism, yet also a sense of lightness and a modern fresh brilliance wrought into his surfaces - achieved by his special take on kofuki, a traditional glazing and finishing technique. Originally his palette was restricted to four traditional colours - white, black, rust and his signature yellow, however he has recently perfected two new and equally stunning colour ways - blue and sage green.
