More Information About The Artist

The mystery of flame work - Oribe, Shino, Bizen and Shigaraki.

Tetsuya Kowari's work is instantly recognisable, organically shaped in the extreme, forms being a dramatic clash of architecture and clay. Extraordinary vessels, sakè and tea drinking ware that are almost too sculptural to use - however they are all designed for use, whether it’s daily or a daily contemplation of their incredible visual appeal.

Born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1970, Tetsuya Kowari graduated in Architecture of Meji University Engineering Department in 1992 and acquired his Master of Architecture in 1996. In 1999 he built his own Anagama wood fired kiln (tunnel kiln) in Fujinomiya in 1999.

Tetsuya-san has accepted 16 prizes from the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition and in 2018 earned the Award of Special Recommendation. Kowari-san has won numerous awards and appointments and presides as a judge over many exhibitions.

In 2021 he received the Shizuoka Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Award at the Shizuoka Prefectural Office.

It is an honour and a privilege to represent the work of Tetsuya Kowari in Australia.
