The subtle, textured finish of this stunning and masterful work is achieved with a dry glaze, high in aluminium, that's cracked and peeled in an artful way during a wood-firing. 

This and its irregular, five-side form, give it the appearance of ancient, lichen covered granite.

Suvira McDonald is a legendary potter based in Northern NSW, whose career spans more than 30 years.

He's known for his lush, generous forms and glazes, and many pieces are wood fired in a Japanese style anagama kiln. Crackled, fire-coloured surfaces that look like the vessel is itself a glowing ember are a hallmark of McDonald's style.

Each piece is like an artwork in its own right, inviting extended contemplation and use, which rewards with a deeper connection to the vessel.
