DEA presents a two hour wheel throwing demonstration by Japanese ceramic master, Toru Hatta, including refreshments and question time.

Hatta-san will demonstrate his masterful throwing techniques and discuss the complex firings his vessels undergo in both wood-fired, anagama kilns and conventional gas kilns.

After the demonstration, there will be refreshments provided and time to speak one-on-one with Hatta-san.

Note that Toru has limited English, but we will provide a translator for the workshop as well as for any follow-up questions.

The event will be kindly hosted by DEA potter David Collins, in his light-filled and picturesque studio in the hills above Berry NSW - a delightful coastal town 2 hours south of Sydney.

Refreshments will include sandwiches, drinks and delicious, basque-style cheesecakes, courtesy of long time DEA supporter, 15cenchi.

We will also offer 10% off the purchase of any Toru Hatta items to the attendees.

Tickets must be purchased in advance online - limited to 20 people maximum.

David Collins Studio

Toru Hatta is a powerhouse ceramicist based near Osaka, Japan. His work is a contemporary fusion of Japanese, Korean and Chinese ceramic history, expert craftsmanship and a focus on the spiritual character of clay.

At DEA, we've been admiring and purchasing his work since our initial foray to Japan in 2013. We first met him in person at a Tokyo exhibition in March 2020 and were lucky enough to visit his studio in February 2025.

We introduced his work to Australia with a solo show in October 2022, and we are now honoured to welcome him in person to Australia for the final leg of his world tour.
