TIM MARTIN • CERAMICIST

TIM MARTIN • CERAMICIST
LONDON • UNITED KINGDOM

Born in Australia, Tim Martin is an acclaimed ceramic sculptor who now lives and works in London.

He is seen as a proponent of the new wave of ceramic art in Europe and has travelled for many residencies over the last few years.

With elements brutalist and raw, often arranged in groupings or juxtapositions, this is work from a master at assemblage.

Not surprisingly, his practice draws inspiration from a background in architecture, and with a nod to the past (the works of Arp or Brancusi or the palette of Rothko come to mind), Martin makes mini monuments to nature that are contemporaneous yet classic.

We love how he uses clay to investigate and play with dimensionality, starting with shapes reminiscent of paper cut-outs - often trees, flowers, corals or clouds - which are then reimagined into three dimensions with stunning results.

In 2019, Tim was one of 21 artists to exhibit in the British Ceramics Biennial in Stoke-on-Trent, UK.

He's also participated in several international residencies, including the Guldagergaard Residency at the International Ceramic Research Center, Denmark, the International Ceramics Studio at Kecskemét, Hungary and the JCI International Research Residency at Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute, China.

WORK @ DEA

We've long admired Tim's refined and elegant practice from afar - often coveting works being shown in London, Europe and beyond - so it's an absolute honour to now have a small selection available at DEA.
