CATHERINE FIELD • CERAMICIST

CATHERINE FIELD • CERAMICIST
SYDNEY • AUSTRALIA

Catherine Field is a ceramic artist based in Bondi Beach, Sydney, NSW and is the maker behind Splendid Wren Ceramics.

Growing up on a farm surrounded by nature, she spent a lot of time making mud pies in the dams and creeks, and now enjoys spending her days making beautiful hand-built stoneware clay pieces that are as beautiful as they are functional. Whilst each piece is unique her work organically fits together. You may notice a fingerprint or maker’s mark reminding you of its uniqueness.

Catherine uses traditional hand-building techniques and enjoys experimenting with clays and glazes to get different textures, finishes and degrees of speckle. Each unique piece is made using a variety of stoneware clays, then bisque fired to 1000 degrees before being glazed with natural, earthy tones. The glazed piece is then fired again to 1260 degrees, ensuring durability and longevity.

Her purpose is to produce beautiful handmade ceramics which bring happiness to those who use them. As a maker she supports conscious consumption and believes in products that will last a lifetime. She makes every effort to make her work as sustainable as possible - using locally produced materials, recycling and reusing clay and other materials such as packaging to minimise waste.

The name Splendid Wren Ceramics is an ode to Catherine’s mother, a creative herself who loved working with her hands, and the little blue wren being her favourite bird.

WORK @ DEA

We were first introduced to Catherine's work early in 2023 when she was part of our collaborative exhibition with local clay studio Claypool. Her stunning vessels are now right at home amongst our permanent offering at DEA.
