Rabbits are the fourth animal in the twelve-year Chinese/Japanese zodiac and are a popular symbol of luck, intelligence and forward progress (which is because rabbits only move ahead, so they are regarded as symbols of advancement and prosperity).

In Japanese, hariko means paper craft. It is said that this papier-mâché technique came down from China in around the Muromachi period. It spread around Japan and is commonly used for folk toys and figurines.
