"Dancing Mandarin" ceramic lamp by Yang Qiu from December 2023.

This delightful ceramic lamp is based on the shape of a mandarin, lovingly rendered in gradated pale greens and pinks, then brought to life with multiple red shoe clad legs. For extra whimsy, the interior of the lamp features a brace of multi-coloured mushrooms and toadstools, which light up like a magic cave when the light is switched on.

The lamp is topped with a little hat, sprouting a tiny, spinning, sad-faced sunflower. When lifted up, the hat reveals a small, removable, battery powered light, with a switch at one end, that projects through into the interior.

width: 8.5cm

Yang Qiu is a prolific interdisciplinary artist based in Sydney, Australia.

Informed by her background as a pastry chef, her unique approach to ceramic creation, involves transforming local produce, such as corn, eggplants, and mandarins, into functional ceramic sculptures, all while exploring the shapes and surfaces of food in her paintings.

She imbues her work with a sense of whimsy and childlike wonder, often characterising her creations with faces and legs, as though imbuing them with personalities and identities.
